History of Adventure Racing

Everything you should be aware of regarding the most challenging team sport in the world

What is Adventure Racing (AR)

Adventure Racing, also called Raids or Multisport, is a self-sufficient race involving multiple disciplines such as mountain biking, trail running / hiking, kayaking / Water sports, rope activities, and orienteering. Teams of 4 compete on an unmarked course, exploring the local culture, traditions, and natural wilderness on their way to the finish line. This sport is recognized worldwide and takes place in various locations around the globe.

Adventure Racing History

The Mount Baker Marathon (WA, USA), held from 1911 to 1913, marked the earliest recorded adventure competition. It served as the inspiration for the Ski to Sea Race, a multisports event encompassing cross-country skiing, running, road biking, canoeing, cyclocross biking, and kayaking.

Evolution of Adventure Race

US Sprint Adventure Races (1997-2010) like HiTec, Balance Bar, Muddy Buddy drew thousands of athletes which later formed Obstacle Course Races. Adventure Race World Championships revived in 2004 which is owned by Adventure Racing World Series, USA. ARWS series is an International Adventure racing organization that brings AR and Race Directors together globally.

Modern Adventure Race

The AR World Series (ARWS) emerged from the 2001 Discovery Channel World Championship Adventure Race, formalized as the Adventure Racing World Championships Series in 2004 with seven global races. Now the organization hosts 70+ annual races, brings together 3-10 day Qualifier expeditions leading up to an annual World Championship, as well as 12-36 hour Regional races that provide an accessible pathway into the sport. This is the best time for AR where new countries are adding to the list of ARWS.

ARWS is present in Africa, South America, North America, Oceania, Asia, Middle East & Europe.
